Welcome to Monroe’s AROUND TOWN GALLERY! A history walk showcasing the the downtown area.
Standard Oil Company / LR Burger
The first service station was erected on this spot in 1936. Standard Oil purchased the property from Mrs. George Felker, whose home was located next door on Midland Avenue and is visible in the picture below.
At that time, Booth Williams was the Standard Oil agent for this area. Frank Ford operated the station until 1949.
For the entire existence of this service station, it was owned by Standard Oil. Starting in 1949, it was operated by Willie Garrett, who was joined by his son, Nelson, in 1965.
Delmar Roberts began working for Willie Garrett in 1951 and continued there for over 3 decades.
The station was demolished in the early 60s and replaced by a more modern facility.
