Mr. and Mrs. Hillman Jackson opened the Monroe Supermarket in 1947, introducing self-service grocery shopping to Monroe. The building was enlarged in 1950 and remodeled in 1957. The Monroe Supermarket was one of the leading grocery stores in Monroe during the 1950s. Tragedy struck in August 1960 when a fire caused $75,000 in damage. The business was never able to recover from this devastation. Hillman Jackson opened a Saab dealership in the building briefly but was unsuccessful. Aycock & Childs Appliance Repair occupied the building for many years, starting in 2002.

Today, the building is home to Sidestreet Boutique and J. Reynolds Furniture and Interiors. Here are some pictures of the Monroe Supermarket as it looked in the 1950s.
