Monroe Hotel
Our earliest records on this property indicate that the Phillips family owned it. This house is the earliest structure for which we have a history. According to early citizens, it was built by Dave Phillips. It burned on Thanksgiving Day of an unknown year and was replaced by this house. This house remained until 1919, when the Monroe Hotel Company purchased the property. The house was moved back (east), and The Monroe Hotel was built on the property.
The Monroe Hotel was a fixture on Broad Street for over forty years. Three stories of modern rooms provided residences and offices for locals, newcomers, and travelers. In addition, a dining room served daily and provided space for gatherings of civic clubs, reunions, parties, and other events.
The Monroe Hotel was razed in 1964 to provide space for the new home of The Farmers Bank. Today, Wells Fargo occupies the building.
